J. Cecil Jarvis
May 11, 1948 - May 22, 2007
A Celebration of Dedication
The Greater Clarksburg 10K has been named after Cecil Jarvis. He was truly a unique individual, a "one-of-a-kind". His multi-faceted life included being a lawyer, a newspaper publisher, an athlete, a community advocate, a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and a friend.
The Greater Clarksburg 10K lost a great supporter and participant with Cecil's death on May 22, 2007.
In addion to running 10K's he was one of only 1/10 of 1% of the population to have completed a marathon which means 99.9% have not. Cecil completed over 30 marathons and an additional 4 iron man competitions (running 26 miles, swimming 2 miles, and a 112 bike ride). He began his running career here in Clarksburg at age 47, with his first race being the Greater Clarksburg 10k. He is a 10 Year Veteran of our race today.
He shook off pain and stepped up, always well prepared to do his personal best.
Cecil had 6 areas of focus which prioritized his daily life:
Faith
Family
Finances/Work
Fitness - He treated his body as a temple
Friends
Fun
We will honor his memory during the 10k and know he is with us. You will notice Cecil's signature on the left sleeve of our T-shirts. As Cecil was always well prepared to do his personal best, we hope each of us can honor him with our personal best not only on Race Day, but in all that we do.
The Race Director of the Greater Clarksburg 10K is Carl Hatfield, former National Marathon Champion. He was the winner of the first Pittsburgh Great Race; a two-time winner of Cherry Blossom Race in Washington, D.C.; winner of the Youngstown Peace Race, qualifier for 4 Olympic Trials, and has won over 500 other road races throughout the country. Carl is a 1995 inductee into the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame.
